Questacon- A Hands-On Adventure for All Ages

Questacon, Australia’s national science and technology center, is a vibrant hub of interactive discovery located in Canberra. This unique museum is designed to ignite curiosity and inspire a passion for science in visitors of all ages. With over 200 hands-on exhibits, Questacon transforms complex scientific concepts into engaging and entertaining experiences. From creating mini-tornadoes to exploring the wonders of sound and light, every corner of the museum offers opportunities for exploration and experimentation.

Questacon, Australia’s beloved science center, has its roots in the visionary mind of Dr. Mike Gore, a physics lecturer at the Australian National University (ANU). Inspired by a visit to the San Francisco Exploratorium, Dr. Gore envisioned creating a similar interactive science center in Australia.
In 1978, with the support of a National Innovations Grant, Dr. Gore secured the old Ainslie Infant School as the initial home for Questacon. Initially open only to school groups, the center quickly gained popularity due to its hands-on approach to science education.
A turning point arrived in 1988 when the Japanese government generously donated a building as a gift for Australia’s Bicentenary. This became the permanent home of Questacon, officially opening its doors on November 23, 1988. The name “Questacon” was coined by Professor Chris Bryant, combining “quest” for “to search, to discover” and “con” for “to study, to examine,” reflecting the center’s mission to ignite curiosity and wonder.
Since its inception, Questacon has grown into a national institution, continually evolving and expanding its exhibits to keep pace with scientific advancements. It remains a beloved destination for families, students, and science enthusiasts alike, fostering a lifelong passion for exploration and discovery.

Beyond the interactive exhibits, Questacon hosts captivating science shows that combine mind-boggling demonstrations with engaging storytelling. Witness explosive reactions, mesmerizing illusions, and fascinating scientific principles explained in an accessible and exciting manner. For those interested in the latest technological advancements, the technology zone provides a glimpse into the future and showcases how science shapes our world.
Questacon is not limited to indoor experiences. Step outside to discover outdoor exhibits that focus on energy, weather, and space. These interactive displays offer a fresh perspective on scientific phenomena and encourage hands-on learning in a natural setting. Whether you’re a curious child, a science enthusiast, or simply looking for a fun and educational outing, Questacon promises an unforgettable experience.
