The Almudaina Palace (Catalan: Palau de l’Almudaina, Spanish: Palacio Real de La Almudaina) is one of the most important historical landmarks in Palma de Mallorca, along with the La Seu Cathedral. What’s even more surprissing – the palace is still used as one of the residences of the Spanish Royal Family during their vacations.

The Almudaina Palace was built during the Muslim domination and served as an alcázar (fortified palace). It was known then as Zuda. Since the 13th century, the place has passed into the possession of the Spanish monarchy. It was then that significant architectural changes began to be made to it. One of them was the reconstruction of Palau de l’Almudaina in the style of the Royal Palace in Perpignan, France. The effect of these modifications can be seen today in the form of many elements characteristic of the Gothic style. However, the architecture of the palace still shows references to Islamic art, such as characteristic arches on the side of the sea. Visiting Palau de l’Almudaina will allow you to discover even more of the peculiarities of this place, such as: former royal chambers, period furniture, equipment, paintings, tapestries or armor.

This place on Mallorca has great historical significance and is worth visiting for that reason alone. Only a small part of the palace can be visited. Many rooms are closed and there is no access to them, and the staff will not provide any information about them.

During the tour, we have access to, among others, the patio of honor and weapons, Arab baths, the Gothic room, or the servants’ room. Both in the patio of honor and in the Gothic room, all important ceremonies take place during the stay of the royal family. During the Arab rule, Palma was a strategic point on the island. Palma was also expanded during those times, and one of the settlements was named “Al-Mudayna”, from which the original name of the palace also comes.

A walk through the palace does not take much time, all rooms are described in several languages. In addition to the architecture, you can also admire old ceramics, paintings, portraits of rulers, carpets, sculptures, or even relics that are located in the palace chapel. I think that visiting such places during your stay on the island is a great idea, especially if you are staying in the vicinity of the capital. Visiting the capital and its monuments takes a whole day. Together with transportation and a break for food.
